Sept. 15 - Camila Vazquez

Camila Vazquez, a senior at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 15. 

Vazquez was selected by the committee for her leadership, academic excellence, and for exemplifying South’s core values of Honor, Enthusiasm, Responsibility and Determination (HERD). She serves as student body president and aims to strengthen school spirit and celebrate South’s success. 

Vazquez is bilingual and earned the Seal of Biliteracy with honors recognition. She is involved in multiple advanced placement classes and has been active in AVID during her four years at South. She is also involved in the school’s leadership class through which she works with south triad elementary school students. 

Vazquez selected Heather Marchese as her favorite teacher because Marchese challenges Vazquez’s perspective and helps her think outside the box. 

“Camila is the definition of a life-long learner, and her curiosity and enthusiasm are what drive her education,” Marchese said.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK 2023-2024

May 26 - Johnathan Tribby


Johnathan Tribby, a senior at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 26.

Tribby was chosen for his dedication to and love of music. He participates in jazz band, orchestra and marching band.

Following graduation, Tribby will attend the University of Wyoming to study music education. He has received multiple music scholarships.

In addition to his school involvement, Tribby plays music for his church worship band, is a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and works at Taco Bell.

Tribby selected band teacher Zamboni Brown as his favorite teacher because Brown instilled in him a love of music and inspired him to study to become a music teacher.

May 19 - Dante Contreras


Dante Contreras, an eighth grade student at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 19.

Contreras was selected for being a model student. He maintains high grades and consistent attendance, ranking top in attendance at the school.

Contreras is a member of National Junior Honor Society where he volunteers in the school and community. He is an office aid and described as being efficient, respectful and dependable. 

“He shows up to every class ready to be a student and is a positive leader with his actions,” Johnson Principal Michaela Bradshaw said. 

In addition to academics, Contreras participates in band, playing percussion, as well as basketball and soccer. He also helps his parents coach volleyball and softball. 

Contreras selected Brandon Schumacher as his favorite teacher because he explains music in a way Contreras can understand and helps him keep the beat.

May 12 - Joshua Padilla


Joshua Padilla, a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School

District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 12.

Padilla was selected by the committee for his dedication to his education, family and

future career. He maintains a high GPA while balancing school and work.

Padilla is known for being kind and respectful. He is bilingual in English and Spanish and

often translates information for his mother.

Following graduation, Padilla plans to become a journeyman electrician. “I am confident he

will thrive in the profession and make meaningful contributions to both his profession and

the world,” East counselor Aimee Steil said.

Padilla selected Peter Berg as his favorite teacher because Berg takes time to help students

understand and makes class fun.

May 5 - Kamryn Tafoya


Kamryn Tafoya, a seventh grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 5. 

Tafoya was selected by the committee for her leadership and involvement. She maintains high grades and is a role model to her peers. 

Tafoya is known for her enthusiasm when it comes to science, enjoying the hands-on experiments and collaborating with classmates. Teachers describe her as attentive, kind and talented. 

Outside of school, Tafoya is involved in basketball, softball and volleyball. She also participates in McCormick’s Unified Sports program and enjoys spending time outdoors with her family. 

Tafoya selected Phillip Bennett as her favorite teacher and coach because he is positive and encourages Tafoya to be a better person and athlete.

April 28 - Eko Cauwenberghs


Eko Cauwenberghs, who is a junior at Triumph High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 28. 

Cauwenberghs was selected for her success in academic and creative pursuits. She is enrolled in classes at Laramie County Community College and has her artwork displayed on campus.

Cauwenberghs also participates in DECA and recently competed at the state competition as well as the Online Business Challenge, placing 2nd at the state level in the personal finance category. 

Cauwenberghs selected Sara Wilson as her favorite teacher because she has inspired Cauwenberghs to do her best work and has established great relationships with students.

April 21 - Braxton Stults


Braxton Stults, an eighth grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 21. 

Stults was selected by the committee for his academic performance and leadership. He maintains a 4.0 GPA and excels in all his classes. 

Stults recently received the Bronze Congressional Award for his commitment to community service both in and outside of school. He volunteers for Unified Sports, a program in which disabled and non-disabled students play sports together. 

Stults is known for his work ethic and kindness. According to Principal Matt Schlagel, he is a friend to the entire Carey community 

In addition to his academics, Stults participates in football, basketball and track. 

Stults selected Todd Jonas as is favorite teacher because Jonas makes learning fun and memorable.

April 14 - Rhayce Barta


Rhayce Barta, a senior at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 14.

Barta was selected by the committee for his academic success and involvement in school activities. He maintains a high GPA while challenging himself in taking Advanced Placement and concurrent enrollment classes. 

Barta is a member of the Leadership class at South, where he serves as a mentor and role model for younger students in the South Triad. He often volunteers outside of class by mentoring Fairview Elementary students. 

He participates in FBLA, where he is a 10-time state champion in various events. He has also earned recognition at the state level in speech and debate.

Barta is a founding member of the Jae Foundation boot initiative at South High. The foundation helps raise suicide awareness. 

Barta selected Chad DeBruyn as his favorite teacher because he creates an engaging learning environment and cares for his students. DeBruyn described Barta as a hard worker and someone who cares about others.

April 7 - Aaniya Patel


Aaniya Patel, a senior at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 7.

Patel was selected for her leadership, academic performance and involvement in extracurricular activities. She maintains a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Spanish Club, Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, International Club and Key Club. 

In addition to her academic achievements, Patel works two jobs and volunteers at the Laramie County Library. She is also the author of two books, one of which she self-published. 

After graduation, Patel plans to pursue a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Wyoming, where she has received the Trustees Scholarship. 

Patel selected Spanish teacher Sasha Patel as her favorite teacher due to Sasha Patel’s engaging and fun class.

March 31 - Caleb Liddle


Caleb Liddle, a seventh grade student at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 31.

Liddle was selected for his kindness and strong academic performance. He maintains high grades and consistent attendance, ranking in the top 1% at the school. 

Liddle is known for being helpful and thinking critically before asking questions. 

Outside of school, Liddle is a member of the Storm Chasers baseball team, is finishing up his swim and dive season, and has participated in cross country. He also helps at his church. 

After researching colleges in his AVID class, Liddle plans to attend the University of Texas at Tyler to study engineering.

Liddle selected Karen Perez as his favorite teacher because she is kind and holds him accountable. 

March 24 - Alyssia Ott


Alyssia Ott, a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 24. 

Ott was selected for maximizing her potential in her final year of high school. She maintains a high GPA while taking Advanced Placement, honors and dual enrollment classes. She is also a member of JROTC and maintains two part-time jobs. 

Ott has a passion for bowling and plans to attend William Penn University on a bowling scholarship. She will study nursing with a goal to enlist in the Air Force and pursue a career as a flight nurse. 

According to East Counselor Sly Johnson, Ott recently moved to Wyoming but has hit the ground running and not looked back according to East Counselor Sly Johnson. She is known for being willing to help others and always has a smile on her face. 

Ott selected Peter Berg as her favorite teacher because he is genuine and honest. 

March 17 - Kinzley Webber


Kinzley Webber, a seventh grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 17.  

Webber was selected for her dedication and strong work ethic. She maintains high grades and is an active participant in the student senate and concert orchestra. 

Webber is known for going above and beyond in her course work and offers to support her peers when needed. Teachers note that she is an outstanding student and a remarkable person. 

Webber selected Heather Boulger as her favorite teacher. “She is an excellent teacher who makes complex topics easy to understand,” Webber said. “Her kindness creates a warm environment where every student feels valued.”

March 10 - Sebastian Portillo-Ibanez


Sebastian Portillo-Ibanez, a senior at Triumph High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 10. 

Portillo-Ibanez was selected by the committee for his academic performance, positive behaviors and ability to overcome adversity. He maintains high grades and is enrolled in classes at Laramie County Community College, allowing him to graduate early. 

According to Triumph Principal Troy Lake, Portillo-Ibanez demonstrates a natural talent for fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. 

Following graduation, Portillo-Ibanez plans to pursue a career in welding and dreams of traveling the world. 

Portillo-Ibanez selected Emily Sackett as his favorite teacher because she has been supportive and has helped him better understand math.

March 3 - Teagun McGinnis 


Teagun McGinnis, a seventh grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 3.

McGinnis was selected for her academic performance and maintains a 4.0 GPA. According to her teachers, she is an active participant in class discussions and approaches each day with an open attitude. 

McGinnis is known for helping her peers with challenging assignments. Classmates often seek her advice and look up to her as a role model. 

In her free time, McGinnis enjoys playing violin, drawing and writing short stories. Following graduation, she plans on attending college to study music or veterinary medicine. 

McGinnis selected Todd Jonas as her favorite teacher. 

“Mr. Jonas does a great job of giving me challenges when I need them,” McGinnis said. “His teaching style works well with how I perceive things and he makes his class fun.”

Feb. 24 - Ross Ten Eyck


Ross Ten Eyck, a senior at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 24. 

Ten Eyck was selected by the committee for his academic success and involvement in school activities. He is enrolled in honors and AP courses and works hard to excel in his studies. 

In addition to his academic achievements, Ten Eyck is a member of South’s We the People team, which recently earned 4th place at the state competition. He is also involved in swimming and choir at South and has been part of the Northwest Choir for the past two years. 

In his free time, Ten Eyck competes in chess tournaments and volunteers at his church. 

Ten Eyck selected choir teacher Janet Weisbrook as his favorite teacher. 

Feb. 17 - Logan Moore


Logan Moore, a senior at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 17. 

Moore was selected by the committee for his display of school values and academic performance. He maintains a 3.9 GPA while participating in advanced placement and concurrent enrollment courses. 

According to Central Principal, Dr. Karen Delbridge Moore embodies what it means to be a well-rounded student and demonstrates kindness, humor and a strong work ethic. 

In addition to his academics, Moore participates in cross-country and indoor track. He also offers freelance services such as house sitting, pet sitting and lawn mowing. 

Moore selected Mari Eisenhart as his favorite teacher because she is positive, supportive and dedicated.

Feb. 10 - Chase Blauzdis


Chase Blauzdis, an eighth grade student at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 10.

Blauzdis was chosen for his academic performance, consistent attendance and leadership. He is known for being self-motivated, respectful and always willing to help his peers.

Blauzdis excels in his studies and demonstrates an ability to collaborate with classmates, often taking the lead in group settings. Teachers praise his positive attitude and strong work ethic.

In addition to his academic success, Blauzdis is actively involved in many Firebird sports.

Blauzdis chose Ken Johnson as his favorite teacher because he enjoys Johnson’s teaching style and the sense of humor he brings to the classroom.


Feb. 3 - Abigail Petri


Abigail Petri, a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 3. 

Petri was selected for her enthusiasm for learning and encouragement to her peers. She maintains a GPA that is above 4.0 while challenging herself by taking multiple International Baccalaureate courses.

In addition to her academic achievements, Petri is an active member of the National Honor Society and the East High Speech and Debate team, where she has placed in the final rounds of competitions and qualified for a National Tournament of Champions. She also participates in the East High Singers and has earned spots in the All-State and Northwest Honor Choirs for all four years of high school.

Following graduation, Petri plans to attend the University of Wyoming to study psychology and attend the Honors college. 

Petri selected Mason Magagna as her favorite teacher. “Mr. Magagna has had such a big impact on me, and he helped me find my love and passion for learning the Spanish language,” Petri said  

Jan. 27 - Deijah Ard


Deijah Ard, an eighth-grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie

County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 27.

She was chosen by the committee for her leadership and for being an exemplary

McCormick Warrior.

Ard is enrolled in all honors core classes and consistently maintains high grades. She is a

leader in the Warrior 2 Warrior school culture program and serves on the Student Advisory

Committee, where she helps guide decisions at McCormick. In addition to her academics,

Ard plays on a travel volleyball team and participates in track and field.

Ard is described as kind, respectful and genuine by those around her. “She uses her

considerable intelligence and character to better the world around her every day,”

McCormick Principal Tina Troudt said.

Ard selected her Spanish teacher Janet Stewart as her favorite teacher. Ard shared that

Stewart shows great patience with students learning a new language and creates an

environment where everyone feels comfortable approaching her.

Jan. 20 - Delko DeCoste


Delko DeCoste, a senior at Triumph High School, was selected as Laramie County School

District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 20.

DeCoste was selected by the committee for his academic performance, behavior and

attendance. He is known for his focus, hard work, and ability to think critically and solve

problems. His dedication makes him a positive role model for his peers.

DeCoste is a warm, fun conversationalist who brightens everyone’s day, according to

Triumph Principal Troy Lake.

DeCoste selected Michael Hendrix as his favorite teacher because of how he connects and

relates with students. DeCoste says Hendrix inspires students to want to do well and

succeed in their classes.

Jan. 13 - Kenneth Zabriskie


Kenneth Zabriskie, an eighth grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 13. 

He was chosen by the committee because of his kindness and consistent efforts to go above and beyond. 

Zabriskie has maintained a 4.0 GPA while enrolled in all honors classes during his time at Carey. He is involved in many extracurricular activities, including Mathcounts, cross country, wrestling and track. 

Following high school graduation, Zabriskie wants to attend the Air Force Academy to study engineering and become a pilot. 

Zabriskie selected Tonya Moore as his favorite teacher because she has been encouraging while teaching him math. Moore also introduced him to Mathcounts and the state math competition.

Jan. 6 - Charleigh Mellish


Charleigh Mellish, a senior at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 6. 

Mellish was chosen by the committee for exemplifying South’s core values of Honor, Enthusiasm, Responsibility and Determination (HERD). 

She maintains a 3.96 GPA while challenging herself in taking Advanced Placement and concurrent enrollment classes. She is also an active member of the Leadership Team at South, where she serves as a mentor and role model for younger students in the South Triad. 

Mellish is a three-sport athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball and softball. She embodies the values of leadership and teamwork both in and out of the classroom. Following graduation, she plans to attend Hastings College where she will continue to play softball and pursue a degree. 

She selected Regan Dulaney as her favorite teacher because she holds Mellish accountable and encourages her to be better student. 

Dec. 16 - Quincy Dereemer


Quincy Dereemer, a senior at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School

District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 16.

Dereemer was chosen by the committee for demonstrating consistency and commitment

to her academics, athletics and activities. She maintains a weighted GPA of 4.114 and

challenges herself by taking difficult courses.

Serving as the student body president, Dereemer is admired for her natural leadership,

kindness and willingness to help others. Recently, she received the Hidden Hero Award

from the Wyoming Association of Student Councils, recognizing her positive influence on

the school community. According to Central Principal, Dr. Karen Delbridge, her leadership

has brought lasting changes to the school that will impact students for years to come.

In addition to her academic success, Dereemer is involved in art, Spanish club, tennis,

theatre and student council. She is known for her balance of hard work, humor and

maturity, and is always ready to take on new challenges. Dereemer’s contributions,

character and leadership make her a standout student at Central.

While it was difficult to only pick one, Deremmer selected Julie Grant as her favorite

teacher because Grant has taught her to love school and learning.

Dec. 9 - Roman Johnson


Roman Johnson, a seventh grade student at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 9.

Johnson was chosen by the committee for his kindness, positive attitude and dedication to helping others. 

Johnson enjoys learning about history in world geography class and is always willing to help his classmates. He is known for being inclusive and supportive, especially with students in the behavior program.

Johnson works hard in the weight room, focusing on his goal of joining the Marine Corps. 

Outside of school, he enjoys playing video games and listening to punk rock, with the Misfits being his favorite band.

Johnson selected Ash Vanderdrink as his favorite teacher because he appreciates her positive attitude and support in English class, which he finds challenging. He also enjoys that they share common interests in gaming and music.

Dec. 2 - Mariah Bledsoe


Mariah Bledsoe, a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 2. 

Bledsoe was selected by the committee for her determination, academic excellence and positive impact on the East High community. 

Bledsoe maintains a 3.979 GPA, ranking 12th in her class; and has taken multiple concurrent and dual enrollment courses to challenge herself academically. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has served in leadership roles within East High’s FCA. 

In addition to her academic achievements, Bledsoe is a student athlete. She plays softball for East and WYCO and serves as an athletic trainer for the East High football team. 

Bledsoe is known for her work ethic and caring nature, going above and beyond in everything she does. As an office assistant, she regularly helps the office staff, even coming in on her days off to assist with tasks. 

Following graduation, Bledsoe will attend Waldorf University in Iowa to pursue a degree in health promotions and exercise science. She has also accepted a scholarship to play softball. 

Bledsoe selected Anna Beckman as her favorite teacher because of Beckman’s engaging and fun teaching style. Bledsoe has had Beckman for two different science classes and appreciates how she makes science enjoyable and exciting.

Nov. 25 - Satta Koroma


Satta Koroma, an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 25. 

Koroma was selected by the committee for her display of leadership and academic excellence. She maintains a 4.0 GPA, excels in math and social studies, and demonstrates a strong work ethic and commitment to her studies. 

Known for her collaborative spirit, Koroma works well with her classmates and is always ready to offer help when needed.  Teachers describe her as a pleasure to have in class, noting that she is never afraid to ask questions to ensure she understands the material. 

In addition to her academic success, Koroma is an active participant in volleyball, basketball, track and tennis. She consistently demonstrates good sportsmanship and encourages teamwork, helping to create a positive environment on the court and track. 

In her free time, Koroma enjoys spending time with her sisters, doing crafts and having movie nights.

Koroma selected Phillip Bennett as her favorite teacher, who she describes as supportive and caring. “He is fun to be around and balances teaching and having fun,” Koroma said. 

Nov. 18 - Elysiana Hernandez


Elysiana Hernandez, who is a senior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 18. 

Hernandez was selected by the committee for her perseverance, compassion and leadership. 

During her time at Triumph, Hernandez has demonstrated a strong work ethic and dedication to academic success. She maintains above average grades and attendance. 

Hernandez is known for her open-mindedness and kindness. She approaches each day with determination which inspires her teachers and peers. 

Hernandez selected Leigh Ann Ojeda as her favorite teacher because she motivates students to achieve their goals and challenges them to reach their full potential. “She is very supportive, especially when we face challenges, both in class and in our personal lives,” Hernandez said. 

Triumph is proud to forever call Hernandez a part of its family.  

Nov. 11 - Cyler Van Der Hoeven


Cyler Van Der Hoeven, who is an eighth-grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 11. 

Van Der Hoeven was unanimously selected by the committee for being an exemplary student that strives for greatness. 

Van Der Hoeven excels in academics, attendance and helping others. He is a role model for his peers, known for his kindness, determination and grit. Beyond the classroom, he is always eager to assist fellow students and embodies qualities of diligence and ambition. 

After high school, Van Der Hoeven plans to pursue a nursing degree at the University of Wyoming. 

Van Der Hoeven selected Tonya Moore as his favorite teacher because of her kindness and passion for teaching. 

Nov. 4 - Issac Rios Quintana


Issac Rios Quintana, who is an 11th grade student at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School Districts 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 4. 

Rios Quintana was selected by the committee for his leadership and commitment to education. He is an outstanding individual who has been a good student this fall, persevering through credit recovery. 

Through tutoring peers in his industrial tech class, he has demonstrated the importance of being respectful to teachers and how to inspire other students through his example. 

Rios Quintana is active on the football team, where he models sportsmanship and determination. 

Rios Quintana selected Paul Weatherford as his favorite teacher because he connects with students and makes learning enjoyable. In describing Rios Quintana, Weatherford says, “He always greets me with a smile and a fist bump, which shows both his enthusiasm and honorability.” 

Oct. 28 - Gabriel Rodriguez 


Gabriel Rodriguez, who is a senior at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 28. 

Rodriguez was selected by the committee for his positivity and for being a role model in maintaining strong grades and attendance.

Rodriguez's hard work and persistence are evident in his involvement with wrestling and welding. He is known for his friendly demeanor and his effort to include all students. 

Following graduation, he plans to pursue a career in welding and hopes to continue wrestling in college.  

Rodriguez selected Steven Winchell as his favorite teacher because of his engaging teaching style and ability to make learning enjoyable. 

Oct. 21 - Hayleigh Brakel


Hayleigh Brakel, who is an eighth grade student at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 14. 

Brakel was selected by the committee for her academic perseverance and positive influence on her peers. She excels in her classes and maintains good grades while serving as president of the National Junior Honor Society.

Her teachers highlight her natural leadership and kind demeanor seen in and out of the classroom. She encourages others and fosters a supportive classroom environment. 

Outside of the classroom, Brakel is Johnson’s volleyball team leader. During games, she cheers for her teammates, gives it her all and maintains a positive attitude. 

Brakel chose Jessica Bailey, the dean of students at Johnson, as her favorite educator. Brakel said she appreciates that Bailey encourages her to strive for her best and consistently checks in on her. 



Oct. 14 - Loriana Walter


Loriana Walter, who is a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 14. 

Walter was selected by the committee for her leadership and involvement at East and the community. She currently maintains a 3.94 GPA while challenging herself in taking advanced placement, and concurrent enrollment courses. 

Walter actively participates in choir, National Honors Society, yearbook, dance and cheer, along with many other clubs and activities outside of school. 

Following graduation, Walter plans to attend North Dakota State University to study agricultural communications and business. 

Walter selected Shannon Stephens Hamilton as her favorite teacher because of the joy she brings to learning and her solution-oriented approach, as well as the time she takes to listen to students. 

Oct. 7 - Wilson Pilger


Wilson Pilger, who is an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 7. 

Pilger was selected by the committee for his academic excellence and positive influence. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking all honors classes and participating in cross country, track and field, advanced band, and Cheyenne Little Theatre productions. 

According to his teachers, Pilger’s unique personality does not go unnoticed. His positive presence impacts everyone around him. He is responsible, kind and dedicated, both inside and outside the classroom. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with friends and skiing. 

Pilger selected Jason Cook as his favorite teacher because he is kind and energetic. He appreciates seeing Cook outside of the classroom as his cross-country coach, where Cook fosters a safe and supportive environment for all students.

Sept. 30 - Ches McCart


Ches McCart, a senior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 30.

McCart was selected by the committee for his display of leadership, hard work and problem solving skills.

During his time at Triumph, he has maintained a high GPA and participated in student council. Following graduation, McCart plans to attend Laramie County Community College to study psychology. 

In his free time, McCart enjoys reading and plays goalie for the Cheyenne Capitals hockey team. He also works as an assistant teacher for the ASK program at Sunrise Elementary.

McCart selected Sara Willson as his favorite teacher because of her upbeat and positive nature and the support she has given him throughout his years at Triumph. 

Sept. 23 - Thomas Baesler


Thomas Baesler, who is an eighth grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 23. 

Baesler was selected by the committee for his strong work ethic and consistent kindness. He regularly checks in with teachers and principals, which demonstrates his commitment to his academics and personal growth. 

Baesler inspires other students through his kindness and hard work. He is described as an amazing student with a bright future. 

Baesler selected Jennie Allen as his favorite teacher because she is always there for him and he enjoys her teaching style. “She always ensures that I am on track and doing what I need to do,” he said. 

Sept. 16 - Camella Wedemeyer


Camella Wedemeyer, a senior at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 16. 

Wedemeyer was selected by the committee for her display of school values and academic performance. She maintains high academic standing while actively participating in multiple advanced placement and concurrent enrollment courses. She has a passion for science, music, tennis and soccer. 

Wedemeyer is a member of the wildlife club and collaborates closely with club sponsor Makala Knox to bring ideas to the group. Her commitment extends beyond the classroom, as she assists her peers with understanding material and stays after class to help clean lab supplies. She hopes to become a wildlife biologist. 

In addition to her academic and extracurricular achievements, Wedemeyer is an active student athlete, participating in both tennis and soccer. Her contributions to her teams and her school community exemplify South’s core values of Honor, Enthusiasm, Responsibility and Determination (HERD). 

Wedemeyer selected Makala Knox as her favorite teacher because she makes learning fun, engaging and exciting. In describing Wedemeyer, Knox says “she strives to do the best she can in everything she does.”

May 20 - Peyton Provencher


Peyton Provencher, who is a freshman at Central High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 20.

Provencher was nominated by the selection committee for being a mentor to his peers and an incredibly determined student. He works hard to maintain his grades in school, recognizing the learning methods that he finds the most helpful and advocating for them.

Provencher encourages those around him to focus on their academics and provides insight on strategies to succeed, such as maintaining regular attendance. Additionally, he is always motivating those around him to involve themselves in school activities, particularly football, as he is a member of the Central High football team.

Provencher selected Behavior Intervention Specialist Jennifer Krause as his favorite teacher because she is incredibly kind and helps facilitate communication between students and teachers.

May 13 - Leah Russell


Leah Russell, who is a seventh grader at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 13.

Russell was nominated by the selection committee for her future ambitions, extracurricular involvement and academic achievement. She currently envisions herself as being a veterinarian or an officer in the armed forces and her teachers are offering their utmost support in the pursuit of either of these ventures.

Russell continues to explore her options, recently discovering her love for theatre through an exploratory course at Johnson. She is active on the Johnson student council and cheerleading team.

Russell maintains A’s in all her classes, which include Honors courses in both Math and English. She intends to pursue more Honors courses as she moves into eighth grade next school year. Russell has recently been inducted into Johnson’s National Junior Honor Society chapter.

She selected theatre teacher Annika Nelson as her favorite teacher because she connects with her students and helps them overcome their fears.

May 6 - Isabella Flournoy


Isabella Flournoy, who is a senior at East High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 6.

Flournoy was nominated by the selection committee for her outstanding character and academic achievement. She is an IB certificate candidate with a 3.321 grade point average. Flournoy plans on attending Colorado Mesa University in the fall with a goal of becoming an attorney.

According to members of the selection committee, she has seen success academically due, in part, to her self-advocacy and time management skills.

Flournoy is described by her peers and staff alike as demonstrating an unwavering strength of character and tenacity in every action and interaction. She is a kind individual who also displays grit and determination.

She contributes to her school and community through participation in a variety of extracurricular activities. As a member of Student Council, Flournoy helped organize a blood drive and plan events such as homecoming. She volunteers at and helps coach the students attending volleyball camps and is an involved member of the Laramie Rodeo Club.

Flournoy selected English teacher Matthew Prevedel as her favorite teacher because he creates a welcoming environment that allows all students to connect to the subject and each other.

April 29 - Achilles Ward


Achilles Ward, who is an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 29.

Ward was nominated by the selection committee for being an exceptional student who represents everything that McCormick stands for. He has received countless praises from students and staff alike, highlighting his relentless optimism and caring nature.

Through his kindness, Ward has improved McCormick’s school culture as a whole. He is constantly inspiring dedication amongst his peers in their schoolwork and helps to uplift the McCormick community, drawing everyone closer together.

Ward is characterized by his love of—and knowledge in—the weather. He loves to share his weather reports with students and staff alike, who can attest to his accuracy and enthusiasm on the subject.

Ward selected McCormick Spanish teacher Janet Stewart as his favorite teacher because she is kind, dependable and always willing to lend a helping hand.

April 22 - Chris Burke

Chris Burke, who is a junior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 22.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his academic drive and exceptional talent. He is described as an excellent student who always models Triumph’s Discovery skills and consistently produces high-quality work.

According to members of the selection committee, Burke has demonstrated high-level ability in a multitude of areas including mathematics, science and chess.

He maintains a GPA of 3.2 and is on track to graduate a year early. After graduation, he plans to attend Laramie County Community College to pursue a career in welding.

Burke selected Spartan Academy teacher Brett Tyrrell as his favorite teacher because he is supportive, helpful and friendly to his students.

April 15 - Courtney Walton


Courtney Walton, who is an eighth grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 15.

Walton was nominated by the selection committee for displaying incredible leadership qualities and academic prowess. She is commonly chosen by her peers as a class leader when her teachers are not present for the day. This comes as no surprise, as Walton has been recommended by all her teachers for her work ethic and kindness. She goes out of her way to be a great friend and is always willing to help others.

Walton maintains a 4.0 GPA and is president of the Carey Student Senate. She is also an active participant in all sports offered at Carey. Outside of school, Walton spends her time running recreationally and playing cello.

Walton selected Carey music teacher Suzy Wagner as her favorite teacher because she shows kindness while encouraging her students to improve and have fun while doing so.

April 8 - Savannah Kohlhagen 


Savannah Kohlhagen, who is a senior at South High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 8.

Kohlhagen was nominated by the selection committee for displaying school values and excelling academically. She currently holds a weighted GPA of 4.288, is actively involved in multiple advanced placement courses, and is concurrently enrolled with Laramie County Community College. She intends to pursue a career in health sciences.

Kohlhagen has been a member of South’s National Honor Society chapter since her sophomore year. She is also a member of the South girls’ varsity soccer team, where she is a shining example of South’s Honor, Enthusiasm, Responsibility and Determination (HERD) values.

Despite this busy schedule, she takes time to volunteer at a local elementary school as a teacher’s aide.

Kohlhagen selected former civics educator Dr. Reagan Kaufman as her favorite teacher because Kaufman encourages students to do their best.

In describing Kohlhagen, Kaufman said, “Savannah exemplifies honor, enthusiasm, responsibility and determination in all aspects of per personal life. She is a role model for her peers and a valued member of her school community.”

April 1 - Sammy Shumway

Sammy Shumway, who is a senior at Central High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 1.

Shumway was nominated by the selection committee for his outstanding character, extracurricular involvement and academic achievement. He is described as being a kind, respectful and compassionate individual. Shumway is a great leader who possesses an exemplary work ethic. He can always be found helping others in school or on the court.

Shumway is involved in both soccer and basketball, as well as being a member of the National Honor Society. He has been awarded all-conference his junior year in soccer and all-state honors his senior year in basketball—the same year that Central won the basketball State Championship.

Shumway maintains an unweighted GPA of 3.882 and a Hathaway weighted GPA of 4.039. He intends to serve for two years on a religious mission in Brazil before returning to attend Brigham Young University. Shumway is currently undecided as to what his major will be, but those around him are excited to see where his path in life will take him.

Shumway selected school counselor Malissa Lance as his favorite teacher because she is a huge support to students and is always willing to listen.

March 25 - Autumn Tupuola-Jones

Autumn Tupuola-Jones, who is an eighth grade student at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 25.

Tupuola-Jones was nominated by the selection committee for exemplary academic standing and extracurricular involvement. She maintains a 3.83 GPA and is a starting shooting guard for the Johnson girls’ basketball team. Off the court, Tupuola-Jones is involved in the Calvary Chapel of Cheyenne Youth Ministry as a student helper.

Tupuola-Jones is looking toward her future with plans to be a crane operator, but she has not ruled out the possibility of an academic or athletic scholarship. If she were given the opportunity to secure either of these scholarships, she would like to major in interior design at Florida A&M University or Florida State University so that she could be closer to her family and southern culture.

Tupuola-Jones selected science teacher Anna Groose as her favorite teacher because Groose inspires her students to learn and explore the world around them.

March 18 - Benjamin Woolsey

Benjamin Woolsey, who is a senior at East High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 18.

Woolsey was nominated by the selection committee for extensive academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities. He maintains a 3.8 GPA while undertaking a courseload consisting of advanced placement, concurrent enrollment and advanced math courses.

Woolsey’s teachers admire his ability to manage a very busy extracurricular schedule while maintaining excellent grades. He is an active and accomplished member of the East High Speech and Debate team, as well as National Honor Society and band.

Beyond East, Woolsey is a member of 4H and an Eagle Scout. He organized and ran a blood drive as his project to ascend to the rank of Eagle Scout. Woolsey plans on attending the University of Wyoming Honors Program to study either math or architecture.

Woolsey selected English teacher Charles Fournier as his favorite teacher because he engages with his student’s interests and helps prepare them for their lives after high school.

March 11 - Anna Douglas


Anna Douglas, who is an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 11.

Douglas was nominated by the selection committee for excelling academically and tirelessly dedicating herself to the arts. She maintains a 4.0 GPA while enrolled in all honors classes.

Douglas shows extreme dedication as a musician in band, choir, vocal jazz, varsity choir and in the Cheyenne Youth Symphony. She has performed at the “Cowboys, Sing On” weekend, an event hosted by the University of Wyoming to allow students to learn from and perform with the University of Wyoming Choir.

Beyond music, but not beyond the stage, Douglas can be found acting in a variety of theatre productions around town. She has acted in both Central High Theatre productions and the Cheyenne Little Theatre Summer Stock. Additionally, she is active in her church youth group.

Douglas is most commonly described as being an incredibly kind and respectful individual to both teachers and classmates. Members of the selection committee said she is an incredibly genuine, artistic and a smart individual who is an integral part of her school and community.

Douglas selected choir director Wendy Dryden as her favorite teacher because she is an incredibly kind and thoughtful individual who always pushes her students to achieve.

March 4 - Eva Torres


Eva Torres, who is a junior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 4.

Torres was nominated by the selection committee for her exemplary coursework and deep involvement in extracurricular activities. She is described as extremely dependable and is always excelling in her classes. Torres is a member of the Triumph Student Council as well as the National Honor Society.

Alongside her extensive academic involvement, Torres is an incredible artist. Staff members say that they are lucky to have her as part of their Triumph family.

Torres selected science teacher Amber Martens as her favorite teacher because she is very understanding and is always willing to help her students.

Feb. 26 - Donovan Carll 


Donovan Carll, who is an eighth grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 26.

Carll was nominated by the selection committee for displaying academic excellence and maintaining high expectations for himself. He maintains a 4.0 GPA and approaches each class with a can-do attitude. Carll maintains this GPA despite moving to different areas of the country quite often. He is always willing to help those around him and works to make Carey Junior High a better place to be each day.

Carll plans on joining any extra-curricular club relating to math, science and chess when he transitions to East High next year. After high school, he plans to attend the University of Wyoming for his undergraduate degree prior to pursuing a medical degree.

Carll selected English-language arts teacher Carmen Fisher as his favorite teacher because she makes learning fun and enjoyable while also communicating effectively with her students.

Feb. 19 - Landon Sundquist


Landon Sundquist, who is a senior at South High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 19.

Sundquist was nominated by the selection committee for extensive academic and extracurricular involvement at South. He has taken AP and concurrent enrollment courses throughout his academic career.

Sundquist shows great interest in STEM fields and has helped to organize the South Triad’s third grade STEM Day for the past three years. He has developed a love for math, which has contributed to him taking multiple high-level AP math courses.

Outside of the classroom, Sundquist can be found on the field as a participating member in South’s football and soccer teams. He volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club of Cheyenne, helping to coach their soccer teams. Additionally, he works on projects through his church.

According to members of the selection committee, whether in the classroom or on the field, Sundquist is a positive role model for others.

Sundquist selected psychology teacher Truman Essex as his favorite teacher because he provides a rigorous and positive learning environment that is full of discussion.

Feb. 12 - Abigail Hoard


Abigail Hoard, who is a senior at Central High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 12.

Hoard was nominated by the selection committee for being a well-rounded student who excels in all that she does. She participates in AP classes and challenges herself with dual enrollment courses offered through LCCC. She maintains a weighted GPA of 3.945 and has taken a variety of elective classes including Spanish, marketing and agriculture.

According to the selection committee, Hoard embodies kindness, hard work and dedication. She has been described as an authentic young lady who models a myriad of positive attributes. Hoard has been consistently recognized for these attributes by her school community, who believe that she is very deserving of recognition.

She is an active and successful member of DECA and FFA. After graduation she plans to attend college in Nebraska or at the University of Wyoming to earn a degree in animal science.

Hoard selected agriculture teacher Thomas Cress as her favorite teacher because he constantly provides support to his students and is a very positive influence.

Feb. 5 - Gia Mordahl


Gia Mordahl, who is a seventh grade student at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 5.

Mordahl was nominated by the selection committee for impressive academic achievement and high involvement in school athletics. She maintains a 4.0 GPA while taking all honors courses, providing insight and encouragement in each class that she is in. Mordahl is described by all of her teachers as being an incredibly kind individual who always brightens their days.

Making sure to stay active outside of the classroom, Mordahl is registered in every sport that Johnson offers. She is an incredible student athlete that provides encouragement to her teammates both on and off the field. When not playing, Mordahl can be found working the concessions stand with her fellow student council members, helping to raise funds for school activities and local charities alike.

Mordahl selected science teacher Talan Premer as her favorite teacher because she has high expectations of her students alongside a terrific amount of support. She pushes her students to be safe, respectful and responsible while challenging themselves academically.

Jan. 29 - Janie Merritt


Janie Merritt, who is a senior at East High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 29.

Merritt was nominated by the selection committee for demonstrating excellent academic achievement as well as prowess in extra-curricular activities. She is a top student in East’s IB program and takes full diploma classes while balancing a busy schedule. Merritt maintains a high GPA and takes part in East’s National Honor Society. She plans on majoring in nursing after she graduates.

Merritt is one of East’s star volleyball players, being named 1st team all-conference as well as receiving the Miss T-Bird Award as Offensive Player of the Year. Both on and off the court, she is an encouraging friend to her peers and pushes them to always do their best.

She is currently involved in a project to beautify the playground utilized by the Early Childhood Development Classes’ T-Bird Preschool. She can always be counted on to rise to the occasion under challenging circumstances.

Merritt selected mathematics teacher Skyler Lashley as her favorite teacher because he is kind, caring and makes math fun.


Jan. 22 - Susanna Scranton


Susanna Scranton, who is an eighth-grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 22.

Scranton was nominated by the selection committee for excelling academically and for her heavy involvement in extra-curricular activities. She has been described by her teachers as being the definition of a model student. Scranton dives deeply into classroom topics, asks thought-provoking questions and takes time on her assignments to consistently produce quality work.

According to members of the selection committee, she is an incredibly kind, helpful and thoughtful individual who cares about her education while simultaneously caring for those around her.

Beyond the classroom, Scranton can be found in the Warrior to Warrior program and Math Counts. She is an active participant in Spelling Bee, Advanced Band and Science Olympiad. Scranton also enjoys watching and participating in the Cheyenne Little Theatre, recently acting the part of Diana Barry in “Anne of Green Gables.”

In her spare time, she likes to read, embroider, knit and crochet.

Scranton selected social studies teacher Tara Lauterbach as her favorite teacher because she challenges her students while not letting them fall behind and is incredibly empathetic towards her students.

Jan. 15 - Giovanna Spezzano


Giovanna Spezzano, who is a junior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 15.

Spezzano was nominated by the selection committee for being a hardworking, engaged student with excellent attendance. She is innovative in her approach to her school projects and has consistent follow-through to take her ideas to completion. Spezzano has been described as creative, reliable and thoughtful by staff at Triumph.

She participates in Triumph’s student council and the school’s art club.

Outside of school, Spezzano plays lacrosse for a travel team and is also on a mountain biking team. She helped paint the collaborative high school street mural during the summer and set up an art display at the Wyoming State Museum for a project. Spezzano’s patience and kindness toward her teachers and classmates also shines. She is a kind person who sees the best in others.

Spezzano selected mathematics teacher Marissa Smith as her favorite teacher because she is very helpful and kind, and she supports students when they are feeling down.

Jan. 8 - Briana Egbert


Briana Egbert, who is an eighth grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 8.

Egbert was nominated by the selection committee for being an incredibly hard-working and dedicated student. Her academic achievements are stellar and she possesses strong leadership qualities. After high school, she intends to study engineering, with hopes to eventually work for NASA.

Egbert is also described as being 100% focused on achieving her goals, as evidenced by the fact that she wakes up at 4 a.m. daily to participate in ROTC at East High. Within ROTC, she participates in Marksmanship, Stellar Xplorers and Color Guard. Despite the early mornings, Egbert is always on time to school with a cheerful and positive personality.

Outside of school, she loves swimming, robotics and shows sheep for her 4-H Club.

Egbert selected Col. Christopher Johnson as her favorite teacher because of his strong leadership and drive to see students that he works with succeed.

Jan. 1 - Carlee Wedemeyer


Carlee Wedemeyer, who is a senior at South High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 1.

Wedemeyer was nominated by the selection committee for being an academically outstanding and responsible student. She has maintained an unweighted GPA of 3.922 and a weighted GPA of 4.275 throughout high school. She has also taken numerous AP courses, alongside dual-enrollment courses offered through LCCC.

She is active in girls’ basketball and soccer as well as a Bible club that she helped create.

According to her teachers, Wedemeyer demonstrates Honorable, Enthusiastic, Responsible and Determined (HERD) expectations at school and beyond. She has been an integral part of the Bison Bistro coffee shop, working as an employee and training her peers. She is dependable, trustworthy and a student who others can look up to.

Wedemeyer selected culinary arts teacher Terri Weaver as her favorite teacher because she is easy to get along with and has high expectations for her students.

Dec. 18 - Sidney Armbrust


Sidney Armbrust, who is a senior at Central High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 18.

Armbrust was nominated by the selection committee for working incredibly hard, challenging herself academically and being involved in numerous extra-curricular activities. She has maintained an impressive GPA while taking challenging courses and pursuing an AP Capstone Diploma. After high school, Armbrust intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree in finance.

According to both staff, and her peers, Armbrust is an incredibly kind and caring individual. She doesn’t hesitate to help others that she is working alongside, even selflessly putting their needs ahead of her own. She also works to make her school and community a better place at every opportunity.

Armbrust selected mathematics teacher Mari Eisenhart as her favorite teacher because she is always easy to talk to and makes the subject more understandable.

Dec. 11 - Hayven Pigg


Hayven Pigg, who is an eighth grade student at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 11.

Pigg was nominated by the selection committee for being an exemplary student and a role model for excellence. She possesses a detailed work ethic and has a near perfect attendance record. Pigg is currently serving as the secretary for Johnson’s National Junior Honors Society.

She can be found excelling in the classroom, court and field as evidenced by the three letters that she has earned through volleyball, basketball, and track and field.

Pigg selected geography teacher Karen Perez Sapien as her favorite teacher because she pushes students to do their best and is an inspiration to those she teaches.

Dec. 4 - Ava Herceg


Ava Herceg, who is a sophomore at East High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 4.

Herceg was nominated by the selection committee for being a diligent student, meeting high expectations and contributing her talents to helping others. She has a 4.0 GPA and is in the top percentile of her class.

She is taking advanced placement, honors and dual enrollment courses at Laramie County Community College. Herceg wants to study biochemistry at Yale University and work in cancer research.

Beyond the classroom, Herceg has been practicing karate for 10 years and has a black belt. She also enjoys teaching and mentoring younger karate students. Herceg volunteers as an office assistant at East High, showing around new students and helping them get adjusted to their new environment.

She selected science teacher Riley Stringer as her favorite teacher because he is a caring person who sees his students as people and tries to connect with them on a personal level.

Nov. 27 - Kamron Johnson


Kamron Johnson, who is an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 27.

Johnson was nominated by the selection committee for being a hard-working, respectful student. He invests time into his learning, asks smart questions, and shapes the classroom culture through exemplary behavior. He also enjoys math and finds it to be an area of strength for him. Despite moving to Cheyenne during the first quarter of the school year and still getting familiar with a new school and community, Johnson has already made significant contributions at McCormick.

Outside of the classroom, Johnson enjoys riding dirt bikes with his Dad and building or repairing cars and go-karts. He enjoys staying active through hunting, basketball, football and working out.

Johnson selected English teacher Kathrine Wheeler as his favorite teacher because she is kind and makes learning and writing easy to understand.


Nov. 20 - Jeremiah King


Jeremiah King, who is a senior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 20.

King was nominated by the selection committee for being a student role model who consistently uses and demonstrates Discovery skills. He is a kind and respectful individual with a charming sense of humor who is always willing to lend a hand.

Due to his dedication to his academic achievements, King is currently on schedule to graduate early this school year. He possesses exemplary attendance and, with his free time outside of school and work, enjoys reading.

King selected math teacher Emily Sackett as his favorite teacher because she is assisting him in completing his final math requirement for graduation.

Nov. 13 - Trent Simmons


Trent Simmons, who is an eighth grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 13.

Simmons was nominated by the selection committee for being an exemplary student at Carey. According to his teachers, he has consistently shown amazing effort in the classroom. He has maintained straight A’s in all of his classes and has shown great success in the after-school sports that he is involved in.

Simmons displays his leadership skills in all that he does. He can often be found helping his classmates, keeping both himself and others engaged in their learning. He maintains a positive attitude and goes above and beyond to help those around him. Simmons is an amazing student who always does the right thing, even when nobody is looking.

Simmons selected mathematics teacher RaeAnn Merry as his favorite teacher because she is an incredibly fun teacher that is always willing to help students with any problems that they may have.

Nov. 6 - Caleb Brewer


Caleb Brewer, who is a senior at South High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 6.

Brewer was nominated by the selection committee for his academic achievements and extracurricular involvement at South High. He is enrolled in multiple AP and concurrent enrollment courses. Brewer is currently the captain of South High’s swim team. He is an active member of DECA and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and is president of South’s National Honor Society (NHS).

As the NHS president, Brewer oversees meeting preparation and induction ceremonies. With FBLA, he assists with packing and organizing Friday Food Bags for students. He also organizes food drives for the Friday Food Bag program at Safeway. Brewer has managed to keep up with all his extracurricular activities while maintaining a cumulative 4.0 GPA.

Brewer selected mathematics teacher Dan Marcum as his favorite teacher because he is passionate about the subject he teaches. 

Oct. 30 - Matthew Wallace


Matthew Wallace, who is a senior at Central High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 30.

Wallace was nominated by the selection committee for his extracurricular involvement and academic achievements at Central High. According to the selection committee, he is a kind, respectful, empathetic and hard-working student.

Wallace is an active member of JROTC and participates in JROTC Raider, color guard and drill. He has been awarded the Special Forces Association Medal for JROTC due to his exemplary behavior. He is a mentor for other students and plans to join the U.S. Army after high school.  

Wallace’s favorite teacher is Sgt. Maj. Roger Harder. According to Wallace, Harder has helped him develop leadership skills and has been a role model who is always available to support him.

Oct. 23 - Corbin Westervelt


Corbin Westervelt, who is a seventh grader at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 23.

Westervelt was nominated by the selection committee for his willingness to thrive academically and for being an exceptional student who embodies integrity and kindness. Westervelt is currently enrolled in honors eighth grade math classes. He is also part of the Capital City Athletic swimming team.

According to his teachers, Westervelt’s unique personality does not go unnoticed. His fun-loving spirit positively impacts everyone around him. He is responsible, friendly, has integrity, and always strives for excellence. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends and playing video games.

His favorite teacher is Ashton Horsley because she is nice and makes jokes to keep the physical education class fun.

Oct. 16 - Ty Bronder 


Ty Bronder, who is a 12th grade student at East High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 16.

Bronder was nominated by the selection committee for his academic achievements and extracurricular involvement both at East and in the community. He maintains a highly ranked GPA, takes Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses and dual enrollment classes at Laramie County Community College (LCCC).

Bronder is part of the East orchestra, swimming team, 4H and Air Force JROTC. He’s held several leadership positions in the AFJROTC, including temporary flight commander, flight sergeant, commander of the second color guard, and currently is the E flight commander. Bronder has earned 17 different awards and ribbons in the program and has completed community service hours at various events.

Bronder has been the president of the 4H club for the past five years and has earned champion ribbons in dog obedience, agility, rally and showmanship.

In his free time, he enjoys participating in professional mountain biking competitions and volunteers at the Habitat for Humanity store, COMEA Shelter and the Cheyenne Animal Shelter. His involvement with the community doesn’t end there, Bronder assists in running the Downtown Runaround project, is a member of the Mayor’s Youth Council and is currently employed as a ground keeper at the Prairie View Golf Course.

Bronder has applied to the Coast Guard Academy and wants to pursue a career in the military. He is in the process of applying for national ROTC scholarships and has been nominated for a full merit-based scholarship at the University of Virginia. His teachers describe him as an impressive student with an outstanding character and spirit who exudes kindness and respect and makes his peers feel welcome and valued.

Bronder selected Lt. Col. Chris Johnson as his favorite teacher because he makes the AFJROTC program lively and fun.

Oct. 9 - Ada Cox


Ada Cox, who is an eighth-grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 9.

Cox was nominated by the selection committee for striving academically at McCormick, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, and for her extracurricular involvement—not only at her home school, but at Central High as well. She is an active member of advanced band, Science Olympiad, jazz band, yearbook club and participates in Central’s marching band. Cox attended Central High’s band practices during the summer and regularly takes part in the school’s football half-time shows.

In her free time, she enjoys hiking, backpacking, reading and writing. She has even written two science fiction books. Cox’s teachers describe her as a curious, hardworking, insightful, kind and polite student. She values her education and truly enjoys learning new things. She stays engaged during class by asking questions, completing schoolwork on time and helping other students. Cox is a role model for all her peers.

Cox chose her math teacher, Jennifer Mettler, as her favorite teacher because she is very articulate and good at explaining her thoughts. She gives a lot of examples and is open to student questions for clarification.

Oct. 2 - Jaiden Dabel 


Jaiden Dabel, who is a 12th grade student at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 2.

Dabel was nominated by the selection committee for striving for the best in all his classes. He is described as a kind and respectful individual who is always willing to help others. Dabel is a great friend to his peers and everyone around him knows that they can count on him for anything they might need, no matter the situation.

According to members of the selection committee, Dabel’s dedication to his academic achievements makes him stand out in every class he enrolls in; he completes assignments on time, remains engaged and productive throughout his classes and has an outstanding attendance record. One of Dabel’s favorite hobbies is playing guitar.

His favorite teacher is Marissa Smith because she is nice, upbeat about life, always willing to help, and she makes math fun.

Sept. 25 - Ashley Mutheu


Ashley Mutheu, who is an eighth grader at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 25.

Mutheu was nominated by the selection committee for her dedication and willingness to improve herself socially and academically. Mutheu moved to Wyoming a few years ago and began her education at LCSD1 as an English language learner. She is an active member of the National Junior Honor Society and maintains straight A’s in all of her classes despite a schedule change a couple weeks after the start of the 2023-2024 school year. 

During her free time Mutheu, enjoys playing volleyball, gaming, writing and cooking. She wants to keep striving to do her best at school to eventually become a doctor.

Her favorite teacher is Ashley Garcia because she is easy-going and goes above and beyond to help her students. According to Mutheu, Ms. Garcia has a fun and engaging classroom and will do anything to meet the needs of the students. 

Sept. 18 - Keely Henderson  


Keely Henderson, who is an 11th grade student at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 18.

Henderson was nominated by the selection committee for her academic achievements and extracurricular involvement both at South High and in the community.

She has taken AP classes at South High and several college level courses at Laramie County Community College, aspiring to obtain her associate degree by the time she graduates high school. She is an active member of South’s National Honor Society and in her spare time she enjoys volunteering at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens all while maintaining a 4.4 GPA.

Henderson is South High’s Swim Team captain and a member of the Capital City Athletics Swim Club. Her honorable, enthusiastic, responsible, and determined characteristics make her a role model for her peers. As described by the selection committee, Henderson is a ray of sunshine that can brighten anyone’s day with her presence.

Her favorite teacher is Elenora Zuber because she is a compassionate teacher and made AP Psychology fun and enjoyable during Henderson’s 2022-2023 school year.

May 22 - Abigail Hoard

Abigail Hoard, who is an 11th grade student at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 22.

She was nominated by the selection committee for being kind to students in all grades and in all areas. She is an excellent role model and has genuine heart toward others.

Hoard is very involved in the National Honors Society, Future Business Leaders of America, FFA and DECA.

She loves to show sheep and ride horses.

Her favorite teacher is Thomas Cress because he is supportive, funny and easy to talk to.

May 15 - Eliana Pacheco


Eliana Pacheco, who is an eighth grader at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 15.

She was nominated by the selection committee for working hard to represent her family and school positively in all aspects of her life. Pacheco maintains good grades and is a kind and genuine person with an infectious smile.

She has also been involved in soccer club for nine years. In her spare time, Pacheco supports her church by assisting in community projects.

Pacheco wants to start her own business as a cosmetologist. She is already looking at schools to achieve this dream after high school.

Her favorite teacher is Dashay Hunt because he pushes her to do her best and is a supportive and caring teacher.

May 8 - Suzette Mejia


Suzette Mejia, who is a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 8.

According to the members of the selection committee, she was nominated because she is a positive influence and contributing participant in every class and treats her peers with respect and kindness.

Meija is an IB diploma candidate.

During her time at East, Mejia has participated in Skills USA, Interact Club, Speech and Debate, National Honor Society, and the Multicultural Student Union Club.  

She is planning to attend Rice University in the fall and has multiple scholarships including Quest Bridge and the Gates Scholarship.  She will major in biochemistry. 

Her favorite teacher is Matthew Prevedel because he pushes her to think deeper and helps her with college processes and scholarships.

May 1 - Rhett Hussey


Rhett Hussey, who is an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 1.

He was nominated by the selection committee because he is kind, respectful and always gives his best. He is a leader among his peers and is a model student.

Hussey always challenges himself, setting high goals and achieving them. He enjoys video games, working on his car with his dad and making new friends.

Hussey hopes to pursue a career in engineering.

His favorite teacher is Matt Owen because he makes his class engaging and fun.

April 24 - Destiney Montoya


Destiney Montoya, who is an 11th grade student at Triumph High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 24.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she is a kind-hearted, empathetic hard worker who strives to do her best.

Montoya has a love for music and is learning to play the piano. Her work ethic has helped her compose her own songs.

She loves spending time with her cats and kittens. Montoya also enjoys cooking, crafts and learning new skills, which makes her an excellent student. She enjoys challenges and is open minded.

Montoya’s favorite teacher is Josiah Stutheit because he establishes positive relationships with his students and he supports Montoya in her music efforts. 

April 17 - Kayla Edwards


Kayla Edwards, who is an eighth grader at Carey Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 17.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she gets exceptional grades and is kind and respectful. Edwards goes out of her way to help others and be a positive example for everyone in the Carey community.

She is a member of the Carey American Sign Language Club. Her favorite subject is art and she also enjoys showing goats at 4H.

Edwards is in honors Algebra and English. In the future she plans to attend law school.

Her favorite teacher is Pablo Franck because he explains math well and is one of the nicest teachers.  

April 10 - Walker Wilson


Walker Wilson, who is a senior at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 10.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his outstanding leadership in ROTC, academic 4.34 GPA and extracurricular involvement. Wilson participates in ROTC, marksmanship, football, indoor and outdoor track and field, and National Honor Society. He also holds the high weightlifting record for wresting at South High.

Wilson recently enlisted in the Wyoming Army National Guard. He drills one weekend a month and plans to go to basic training after he graduates. He also plans to attend the University of Wyoming and major in engineering.

ROTC instructor Lt. Col. Christopher Johnson shared that Wilson is a mentor to his freshman cadets. Teachers say he is kind, intelligent and a driven role model to his classmates.

Wilson said he would like to honor Principal Phil Thompson because of his years of leadership service and the opportunities he provides for all students.

April 3 - Atticus Spillman


Atticus Spillman, who is a senior at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 3.

He was nominated by the selection committee because he is genuine and kind. He maintains a 3.354 GPA and has been accepted to attend college in Missoula, Montana next year with his sister.

According to the selection committee, during his junior year, Spillman became ill and kept up with schoolwork while homebound. He is doing very well now and was able to come back for his senior year.

Spillman has participated in tennis and chess club. He enjoys snowboarding with his family and friends.

His teachers shared that he is a model student and he is kind, self-motivated and always prepared for class.

His favorite teacher is Amy Tighe because her lesson plans are interesting and she teaches outside the box. She is very kind and encouraging to her students.

March 27 - Zaidyn Pare


Zaidyn Pare, who is a seventh grader at Johnson Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 27.

He was nominated by the selection committee because of his dedication towards his scholarship and his never-ending positive attitude. Pare cares for his peers and school, so he was selected to help the new principal in the coming school year. He has good grades and continues to improve every quarter.

Pare helps keep school grounds clean. He has a great sense of humor.

He is conscientious about his class performance and gives 110 percent every day. He won’t let other students get him down and refuses to be outworked. He hasn’t been tardy to class yet this year.

Pare loves art and the outdoors. He wants to be an elementary teacher when he grows up.

His favorite teacher is Robin Porter because she gives him good opportunities to serve the school and she is always kind.

March 20 - Daira Ruiz-Lizama


Daira Ruiz-Lizama, who is a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 20.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she is an IB diploma candidate and pushes herself routinely. Even though Ruiz-Lizama is involved in cross country, indoor track and Interact Club, she still is successful in all her classes.

She sets a positive tone in class, asks good questions and is a role model for her classmates.

Ruiz-Lizama greets everyone with a smile and is always positive and upbeat.

Her favorite teacher is Rick Simineo because he is funny, supportive and does a great job of explaining the content.

March 13 - Kennedy Bartow


Kennedy Bartow, who is a seventh grade student at McCormick Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 13.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she gives 100% effort into every assignment. Bartow’s work on projects inspires others as she sets a good example for her classmates.

Bartow enjoys family time, listening to music, sewing and crocheting. She is inspired by her grandparents and by her mother because she is courageous and never complains.

Her role model is Ruth Bader Ginsburg, which is why she wants to become a lawyer to help solve world issues.

Bartow is a member of the Junior National Honors Society, McCormick Student Senate and the co-founder of the McCormick Yarn Club.

Her favorite teacher is Amanda Morgan because she enjoys her sense of humor and said Morgan is always there for her students.

March 6 - Hannah Astorga


Hannah Astorga, who is an 11th grade student at Triumph High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 6.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she has earned a 3.64 GPA and has been on honor roll every quarter.

Astorga fosters a positive attitude and is accepting of others. In the classroom she gives thoughtful answers and engages others.

She said she likes that Triumph High School has small class sizes, more support and friendliness.

After graduating she plans to pursue a career in nursing.

The selection committee said Astorga works extremely hard at school and has a part-time job.

Her favorite teacher is Leigh Ann Ojeda who is very supportive and has a professional attitude. 

Feb. 27 - Lauren Heny


Lauren Heny, who is a seventh grade student at Carey Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 27.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she is a dedicated, reliable, intelligent and kind student.

Heny is the Carey vice president of Future Farmers of America and enjoys showing goats in FFA & 4-H.

She is involved in basketball, swimming, volleyball, and the Cheyenne Baseball league.

Her favorite teacher is Dan Sawyer, who makes science class fun within his assignments.

Feb. 20 - Salina Hernandez


Salina Hernandez, who is a senior at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 20.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her outstanding academic success and contribution to South High School’s community. Hernandez has 4.8 GPA and is South’s senior class president, president of FBLA and National Honor Society vice president.

She works with students who attend the ASK program at Arp Elementary, which is an after school program that educates elementary students about other countries and cultures.

Hernandez serves the community by hosting food drives and preparing food bags.

Teachers describe her as a person who has shown tremendous growth at South High School, saying she gives 110% to her education. Hernandez is a finalist for the Daniels scholarship.

Hernandez plans to attend the University of Wyoming and major in criminal justice because she loves politics, government and helping people.

Her favorite teacher is Julie Potter because she helped her apply to colleges, prepare scholarship essays, and has helped her become the student she is today.

Feb. 13 - Cameron Moyte


Cameron Moyte, who is an 11th grade student at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 13.

She was nominated by the selection committee for setting a great example in both academics and character for the Central High community.

Moyte is enrolled in the AP Capstone Program and is on Central’s volleyball and tennis teams.

According to the selection committee, Moyte is determined and intrinsically motivated. She is good-humored, competitive, and caring. She is also able to set challenging but realistic goals.

Moyte’s favorite teacher is Joseph Barlow because he is a great teacher and his focus on students goes beyond academics to include their overall well-being.

Feb. 6 - Gracee Grisham


Gracee Grisham, who is an eighth grader at Johnson Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 6.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her academic and civic contributions. Grisham maintains a 3.8 GPA and currently serves as an officer in the National Junior Honor Society. She is representing the state of Wyoming at the LEADS conference in Washington, D.C.

Through her role on student senate, Grisham helps coordinate the climate and culture of student activities and celebrations. Members of the community consider her to be a role model for her work in local dance classes with younger children.

Grisham wants everyone to succeed even when they aren’t having the best day. She loves art and school. She has been swimming for the last 12 years and is active in volleyball, basketball, golf and plays guitar.

She has helped with organizing Greenway cleanups and has plans to raise funds for donations to the local animal shelter. She and her friends are seeking ways to help their school while its custodial crew is short staffed.

Grisham’s favorite teacher is Ken Johnson because he is supportive and a good teacher.

Jan. 30 - Madoc Wrobetz


Madoc Wrobetz, who is a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 30.

He was nominated by the selection committee because he is a conscientious student that undergoes rigorous course work. Wrobetz is a self-starter and has a great work ethic. He is planning to be an engineer and has taken courses related to engineering.

Scott Hayes, a technical education teacher at East, said, “Madoc is a hard-working student who is very eager to please.  His attention to detail is second-to-none.  He is all about turning in quality work because that is a direct reflection of him. He is very polite and enjoyable to talk to. I wish I had more students like him; he is a pleasure to work with.”

Wrobetz’s favorite teacher is Heather Tyrrell because she is a great teacher and he has learned a lot from her.

Jan. 23 - Kaitlyn Meyrick


Kaitlyn Meyrick, who is an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 23.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she is an academic rock star, a musician with McCormick Orchestra and a standout soccer player.

“No matter what community Kaitlyn is contributing to, she is doing it with zest, intelligence and kindness,” members of the selection committee said. “She is a remarkable combination of all three, always proud to work her hardest and be her best. She is a fantastic leader, a positive peer, and we so appreciate her.”

Meyrick likes to hang out with family and friends. She looks up to her older sister for inspiration. She enjoys orchestra, volleyball, and volunteering with her soccer club.

In the future, Meyrick wants to pursue a career in the medical field.

Her favorite teacher is Leslie Fox because she is inspirational and supportive.

Jan. 16 - Kearra "Arlo" Siler


Kearra “Arlo” Siler, who is an 11th grade student at Triumph High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 16.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she is a tremendously fun, respectful, and productive student. Siler is always in a good mood and is the first one to smile and take on an assigned task. She is patient, tolerant and liked by everyone.

As an example of her pro-social behavior, Siler once went above and beyond by sharing her favorite Russian salad dressing with everyone after an amusing circle conversation about the “best salad dressing.”

Siler’s favorite teacher is Doug Moratzka because he is charismatic, always in a good mood and helps push her to get her work done. 

Jan. 9 - Logan Goff


Logan Goff, who is a seventh grader at Carey Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 9.

He was nominated by the selection committee because he is polite in all his interactions such as holding doors, picking up trash and helping his peers. Goff is a friend to anyone who needs one. He works hard in his classes and always follows teachers’ instructions.

Goff’s interests are video games, programming and tinkering with electronics or anything mechanical. He can often be found with a book about astrophysics and space exploration.

Goff participates in all his classes and is a leader in demonstrating safe, respectful and responsible behavior.

His favorite teacher is Bailey Lanier, who helps him do well in English.

Jan. 2 - Savannah Judkins


Savannah Judkins, who is a senior at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 2.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her outstanding academic success. She is ranked No. 1 in the senior class with a 4.321 GPA. The selection committee shared that Judkins is a quiet leader who works hard and is committed to excellence. Judkins is involved in the music community and has served as Master for Orchestra for the last three years. She has also been selected for All State Orchestra all four years of high school.

Judkins is an active participant in We the People, Color Guard, National Honor Society, band, jazz band, marching band and orchestra.

Outside of school she works at Hathaway and Coons Law Firm.

Judkins plans to attend college at the University Wyoming or Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington to pursue a degree in music education.

Her favorite teacher is Jaylene Willhite because she has been her musical mentor since seventh grade. Willhite has inspired her to become a music teacher.

Dec. 19 - Andrew Edwards


Andrea Edwards, who is a senior at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 19.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 4.277 weighted GPA, and is the top of her class. She takes honors and AP classes because she likes the challenge and earning college credits.

“She is a true role model for all students and is respected by those who get to know her,” the selection committee said.

Edwards helped start and grow Central’s Academic Challenge team. She is the president of both the Academic Challenge Team and the International Club. She likes to be in clubs because they expand her knowledge.

She has a love for history and is an intern at the Wyoming State Archives.

Edwards’ favorite teacher is Courtney Paul because she is easy to talk to and makes her feel comfortable and heard.

Dec. 12 - Finnegan Fournier


Finnegan Fournier, who is a seventh grader at Johnson Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 12.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his commitment to perfect attendance, 4.0 GPA while taking eighth grade honors math, advanced band, honors science; and for lettering in boys cross country.

Fournier is an avid hockey player. He also plays lacrosse and volunteers for community clean-up projects with his team.

Fournier wants to be a robotics engineer and is looking into school options such as the Naval Academy. He loves to invent and tinker.

He has a loving and supportive family, and his younger brother is a huge part of his life.

Fournier’s favorite teacher is Shelby Brown because she keeps the honors math class fun, and the work is “difficult but not boring.”

Dec. 5 - Alexis Johnson


Alexis Johnson, who is a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 5.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she has excellent attendance, maintains a 4.0 GPA and is one of East’s top 16 students for GPA out of 305 seniors.

According to the selection committee, Johnson is great student who has high expectations for herself and is always willing to contribute her talents to help other students.

She volunteers for Friday Food Bag Foundation and participates in National Honor Society, Interact Clubs and SkillsUSA. When she is not at school or volunteering she enjoys traveling and working out at the gym.

After high school she wants to attend the University of Wyoming to study biomedical engineering and then go on to medical school. Johnson’s dream is to create artificial organs to assist with saving lives.

Her favorite teacher is Mark Seivley because he is super helpful and makes class fun.

Nov. 28 - Trey Korber Green


Trey Korber Green, who is a seventh grader at McCormick Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 28.

He was nominated by the selection committee because he is a hard worker, who remains engaged and provides excellent work.

According to the committee, Korber Green is a valuable class member who provides insightful comments during class discussions. He is also involved in Student to Student, a connection network and service group for military families.

Korber Green enjoys spending time with family, drawing, playing games, fishing and watching movies. As a military family member he would like to become a military doctor because he likes to help people.

Outside of class and family time, he enjoys playing football, golf and basketball.

His favorite teacher is Ann Christopherson because she brings a lot of fun and joy to class.

Nov. 21 - Shondra Derby


Shondra Derby, who is a senior at Triumph High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 21.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she is a dedicated student. She is intelligent, happy, and a little shy.  

Derby’s family is proud of her artistic talents, and she plans to pursue a career in fashion design. Her friends describe her as fun-loving and open-minded. She is known to be a good friend that supports and cares for her classmates.

Derby is a member of the National Honor Society. She also participates in the school’s annual blood draw.

Derby said her favorite teacher is Amber Martens because she is kind and patient.

Nov. 14 - Makaila Merriam


Makaila Merriam, who is an eighth grader at Carey Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 14.

She was nominated by the selection committee because she works hard and does her best in all aspects of school. Merriam’s character is outstanding as she always goes out of her way to help students and staff.

She has a 4.0 GPA and is interested in theater, art, diving and playing the violin.

According to the selection committee, Merriam’s attitude is always positive and represents the best of Carey Junior High School.

Her favorite teacher is RaeAnn Merry, whom she sees as an effective and caring math teacher.

Nov. 7 - James Hushbeck


James Hushbeck, who is a junior at South High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 7.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his outstanding academic success with 4.195 GPA and his involvement in the school community.

Hushbeck has participated in football and marching band for three years and was awarded All-State in band for his talents in playing baritone. He is loved by his peers and was named Prince of Homecoming. His teachers say he is an eloquent and thoughtful writer and considers his words before speaks.

Hushbeck has a strong work ethic and easy-going attitude and works to balance academics, athletics and activities. He has participated in South High’s leadership program and is a leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

His favorite teacher is his band teacher, Gino Hernandez, because he is easy to be around, friendly and easy to talk to.

Oct. 31 - Jose Escobedo


Jose Escobedo, who is a senior at Central High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 31.

He was nominated by the selection committee for being a hard-worker and being able to manage and prioritize his time. He has many good qualities such as being kind, helpful and polite.

According to the selection committee, Escobedo has positive energy and is quick to advocate for himself. He is well-prepared, engaged and has good morals and values along with a lot of respect for himself and peers.

Escobedo is involved in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. He moved to Cheyenne from Jackson, Wyoming, nine months ago.

His favorite teacher is Max Vega-Rodriguez because he is nice, flexible, helpful and makes learning fun.

Oct. 24 - Tremel Ray


Tremel Ray, who is an eighth grader at Johnson Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 24.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his growth over the past year and to celebrate the fantastic student he has become. He is dedicated to the motto of “1% better every day,” which helped get him where he is today.

Ray loves and cares for his brother, four sisters and his mother. He dedicates this award to his mother for her continued coaching, guidance, motivation, and sheer determination.

Ray has played basketball since he was 3. After high school, he wants to continue to play basketball and has dreamed of playing for the Kansas Jayhawks.

Ray’s favorite teacher is Dashay Hunt because he checks on him every day and motivates him to not give up and keep going.

Oct. 17 - Dakota Angeloe


Dakota Angeloe, who is a senior at East High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 17.

He was nominated by the selection committee for working hard academically. He has been involved in Air Force Junior ROTC for four years building leadership skills and is a team member of AFJROTC’s model rocketry program. He also has excellent skills in woodshop class.

ROTC Instructor Col. Christopher Johnson said, “Dakota is great young man who always works hard to wear the uniform with pride in ROTC and is always eager to learn new things.”

Angeloe serves as a teachers’ assistant in Career Counselor Aimee Steil’s office.

“He takes on each task with a genuine good nature and is positive in all his interactions with peers and adults,” Steil said.

Angeloe’s dream was to enlist in the military but due to a medical condition he is disqualified. However, he remains positive and plans to pursue a career in carpentry.

His favorite teacher is Peter Berg because he makes history fun and easy to learn. His class is engaging and full of fun activities.

Oct. 10 - Makenzy Creel


Makenzy, who is an eighth grader at McCormick Junior High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 10.

She was nominated by the selection committee for being a great student in and out of the classroom. She maintains excellent grades, has received a citizenship award and is always willing to help others. Creel also represents McCormick in extra-curricular activities such as athletics. She is an example of positivity for her peers.

Creel enjoys watching the latest action movies, listening to her favorite songs, spending time with family and friends, and playing volleyball. Her mother inspires her because of her military service and because she makes a positive impact on our country. Her career goal is to become a pediatric surgeon.

Her favorite teacher is Phil Bennett because he is a great teacher in the classroom, and she thinks “he is the best basketball coach ever.”

Oct. 3 - Beau Austin


Beau Austin, who is a senior at Triumph High School, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 3.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his diligence, self-direction, and hard work in the classroom. He exemplifies what it means to be a student at Triumph High School.

“He has an advanced emotional maturity that, when coupled with his intelligence, allows him to navigate successfully through his coursework,” Triumph Principal Troy Lake said.

According to the selection committee, Austin is always willing to help classmates with advice or by giving out food when they are in need. He has a positive attitude and a belief that he will improve. According to Lake, this has led to a tremendous amount of growth.

His favorite teacher is Tim Freymuth because he helped allow and encourage Austin to develop his current mindset and instill hope for the future.

Sept. 19 - Aiden Weber


Aiden Weber, who is a senior at South High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 19.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his team building and peer mentorship.

“His teachers describe him as hard working, helpful, and a positive member of the HERD,” South Assistant Principal Kerri Gentry said.

According to the selection committee, anytime he has the chance to help a teacher or classmate, Weber is the first to volunteer. He also works closely with teachers to understand class content.

Academically, Weber has participated in SkillsUSA robotics for the last three years. In 2022, he was a State Qualifier and placed 2nd, which earned him a spot to go to nationals.

His SkillsUSA coach described him as a very dedicated member, peer leader and mentor.

As an athlete, Weber has played football for the last four years and wrestled for three years. Due to an ACL injury, he may be unable to participate in wrestling matches this year.

"This summer he coordinated, planned and guided the Little Junior Bison Football Camp, where he taught young aspiring football players in the community that not only is playing football fun, but being a Bison someday is the best way to grow as a student and athlete," Gentry said.

His coaches described him as a lighthearted, supportive, and positive leader who pushes through adversity.

Weber is not only an excellent student but has also been a South High employee for the last three years as a student sweeper.

After graduation, he plans on attending college to play football and receive a degree in sports medicine.

Sept. 26 - Achyut Ramesh


Achyut Ramesh, who is an eighth grader at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 26.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his strong work ethic, exceptional grades and positivity throughout the classroom. Committee members described Ramesh as very compassionate and always lending a helping hand to his peers.

“His teachers describe him as the glue in the classroom, unifying his peers,” Carey Principal Derek Nissen said.

Ramesh likes to participate in the Special Olympics. He also enjoys bowling and is a very talented artist.

His favorite teacher is Tifaney Jenkins because he loves going to art class.

May 23 - Conner Hyatt


Conner Hyatt, who is a sophomore at Central High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 23.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his work ethic and commitment to his academics.

“Conner is respectful, intentional and goal oriented,” Principal Fred George said.

Hyatt holds a weighted GPA of 3.75 and he is enrolled in Honors biology, wood technology and consumer auto courses.

He plays football for Central High and has participated I track.

During his free time, Hyatt likes to workout and watch football.  

In the future, Hyatt would like to play football collegiately and attend college on an academic scholarship. He would like to study to be a physical therapist. 

May 16 - Evan Westervelt


Evan Westervelt, who is an eighth grader at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 16. Exceptional

He was nominated by the selection committee for always lifting those around him up and being an exemplar model for others to follow.

“I greatly appreciate Evan's upbeat and positive attitude,” social studies teacher Joey Richert said. “He makes a wonderful role model for his peers as his is constantly kind, respectful and hardworking.”

Math teacher Lisa Harbeson states that Westervelt strives for excellence in his honors algebra class by knowing when to focus, helping others and making corrections to better his grade and understanding.

Along with taking honors courses, Westervelt maintains a 4.0 GPA, and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society.

“Evan is in my honors English class, and he is an enthusiastic and curious learner,” language arts teacher Rebecca Murray said.

According to the selection committee, as a member of the swim team, Westervelt swims around the clock as he begins his day lifting at 5 a.m., goes through a full day of school and then to practice right after.

In his spare time, Westervelt serves as a youth swim coach. He has also done community service at the Comea Shelter and always seeks to help others in need.

In the future, Westervelt wants to attend a trade school to become an electrician and simultaneously become a real estate agent.

May 9 - Jenna Merritt


East High senior Jenna Merritt has been named the May 9 Student of the Week.

According to the selection committee, Merritt is a dedicated student, kind to everyone, reliable and conscientious.

She has been an International Baccalaureate (IB) student since her freshman year in high school and is pursuing an IB diploma.

Merritt is involved in SkillsUSA, art and plays volleyball. She also has a sister who is in the IB program at East.

“Jenna is willing to discuss issues that are controversial but is able to keep an open mind and listen to the other side,” East High IB Program Coordinator Jon Lever said. “She truly embodies the idea of listening to understand, rather than listening to respond.”

May 2 - Maia Wiley


Maia Wiley, who is an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of May 2.

“Maia is an outstanding student,” language arts teacher Suzanne Szabo said. “She works hard to maintain top grades every quarter by going above and beyond in her assignments while balancing outside activities.”

According to the committee, Wiley’s academic strength is math as she is already taking a high school honors math course. She is a member of the schools’ track team and is a fourth year orchestra student.

“She is kind, responsible and respectful in class and uses class time wisely,” Spanish teacher Janet Stewart said. “She deserves recognition for being an upstanding citizen.”

Outside of school, Wiley enjoys playing the violin. She also likes to ride horses and participates in 4-H.

“She is one of the hardest workers and nicest students,” music teacher Leslie Fox said. “She is always on task, focused, listening to directions and meeting expectations.”

Wiley’s future goal is to be successful as she is still considering her options as she grows up.

“She has a very bright future before her,” committee members said. “We all know she is destined for amazing things.”

April 25 - Jaelyn Tafoya


Jaelyn Tafoya, who is a senior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 25.

“Since attending Triumph, Jaelyn has grown into an academic powerhouse,” members of the selection committee said.

According to the committee, Tafoya is a member of National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) and is attending a concurrent enrollment English class at Laramie County Community College (LCCC).

“She has been a very creative and fun member of our TV media class,” committee members said. “She provides much entertainment in her pieces for the school’s news reports.”

Along with being a bright student, Tafoya practices activism in her spare time.

“She represents the best kind of student our district can hope to foster and cultivate,” Triumph Principal Troy Lake said. “We are fortunate to have her as a member of our student body as she moves on to graduate at the end of the school year.”

April 18 - Saul Verduzco-Amezcua


Saul Verduzco-Amezcua, who is an eighth grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 18. 

Verduzco-Amezcua is enrolled in all honors core classes and maintains a 4.0 grade point average.

“Saul is an exemplary student who demonstrates respect, responsibility and integrity,” members of the selection committee said. “He enjoys learning and works hard on every single task or assignment he is given.” 

Along with being a straight A student, Verduzco-Amezcua participates in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program.

“He is consistently going above and beyond expectations,” the selection committee said. “He engages in the learning process and is always ready to learn and grow.”

During his free time, Verduzco-Amezcua enjoys playing soccer, video games and spending time with his family.

“Saul is not only an amazing student, but also a wonderful person,” committee members said. “He cares deeply about other people and is always willing to help those around him.” 

April 11 - Diana Arenas-Rocha


South High senior Diana Arenas-Rocha has been named the April 11 Student of the Week.

She was nominated by the selection committee for emerging as a leader in her senior class and for displaying the HERD (honorable, enthusiastic, responsible and determined) values daily.

“Diana always does her work with honor and integrity,” AP U.S. history teacher Dr. Reagan Kaufman said. “I love her sense of humor and determination to do well in class. She is a great leader.”

Throughout her high school career, Arenas-Rocha has taken honors and Advanced Placement courses along with maintaining a job.

During her time in the TV media production class at South, she created a public service announcement on the topic of sexual harassment.

“She created the scripts, did all the interviewing, filming and editing herself,” Assistant Principal Kristen Siegel said. “She took on this project as she felt this was a very important topic that students needed to be informed about.”

As a first-generation United States citizen, Arenas-Rocha has learned English as a second language, and she is bilingual in both Spanish and English.

“Diana has overcome several obstacles throughout her life,” Siegel said. “She has done so with determination, hard work and a positive attitude.”

After graduation, Arenas-Rocha plans to attend the University of Wyoming and majoring in international studies, politics or law. She would one day like to work in the government. 

April 4 - Jordyn Medina


Jordyn Medina, who is a senior at Central High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of April 4.

He was nominated by the selection committee for his perseverance, hard work and determination.

“What makes him most unique amongst his peers is his optimistic attitude and his positive approach with everyone he encounters,” Principal Fred George said.

Medina holds a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and he is enrolled in both computer programming and computer graphics in addition to his core academic courses.

He is the co-founder and an active member of Central High’s Anime Club and Karaoke Club.

During his free time, Medina enjoys time with his family, playing video games, programming, staying active in his church, watching TV and listening to motivational speakers.

After graduation, Medina plans to attend Laramie County Community College. Once completing his prerequisite courses at LCCC, he plans to transfer to the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Arizona, to major in game studies. 

March 28 - Devin Hawk


Devin Hawk, who is a seventh grader at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 28.

He was nominated by the selection committee for being a stellar math student who is enrolled in honors math, science and world geography courses along with his 4.0 GPA.

“Devin has the self-confidence to flourish in a class that is a grade above his peers,” math teacher Debi Parker said.

Language arts teacher Quinton Bledsoe states that Hawk thrives in any situation and is always willing to go above and beyond for himself and his fellow classmates.

“Devin has a goal-oriented mindset which will guide him to be successful throughout his life,” physical education teacher Ashton Horsley added.

Science teacher Dan Sawyer said Hawk works cooperatively and collaboratively with his classmates, goes above and beyond and does more than the required course work.

“His interactions with adults and students demonstrate a level of empathy and maturity that is beyond most people his age,” social studies teacher Karen Perez said.

In his spare time, Hawks volunteers as a teacher’s aide with toddlers at his church. He also enjoys reading, hanging out with his friends, playing video games and recreational and competitive soccer.

In the future, Hawk’s goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in a math or science related field.

March 21 - Melissa Kidd


East High sophomore Melissa Kidd has been named the March 21 Student of the Week.

She was nominated by the selection committee for maintaining a 3.5 GPA, having excellent attendance and grades and for being incredibly involved in extracurricular activities while both in and outside of school.

According to the committee, Kidd is involved in Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC), tennis, soccer and orchestra. She also participated in the Poetry Out Loud competition and won champion for the 2021-2022 school year.

When not in school, Kidd volunteered as a cat handler at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter, played for the Cheyenne soccer league and participated in Girls Scouts. She is an active member of Boys Scouts of America and will receive her Eagle Scout badge in November 2022.

After graduation, Kidd plans to attend Laramie County Community College. She then wants to transfer to the University of Wyoming or the University of Northern Colorado Greeley to earn a degree as an accountant or secondary school social studies teacher.

“Melissa is our Student of the Week because as a sophomore she is taking full advantage of her high school experience,” East High guidance counselor Sly Johnson said. 

March 14 - Deron Walker


Deron Walker, who is a seventh grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 14.

“Deron is a fantastic student and is definitely deserving of being our Student of the Week,” math teacher John Scott said. “He is kind and helpful to his fellow students, respectful to staff and a very hard worker.”

Along with being an outstanding student, Walker enjoys playing basketball, doing arts and crafts, drawing and playing video games. His favorite subjects are math and science and he is proud of his grades.

“Deron is a great student and always completes his work right away,” language arts teacher Erin McNamee said. “He is friendly, respectful and I think he is an excellent choice for this.”

Walker said that what he likes most about McCormick are the people because they are nice and kind. He also enjoys the teachers and the classes he takes.

“He is a great student with a fun personality,” substitute teacher Holly Coles said. “He has the best giggle laugh.”

Walker’s goal is to maintain good grades throughout his entire school career. He then plans on going to college and becoming an anesthesiologist.

“Deron exceeds expectations regarding behavior and quality of work,” social studies and U.S. history teacher Jessica Edwards said. “He is a quiet, funny student with a gentle nature and his laugh is contagious. He is an excellent choice for Student of the Week.” 

March 7 - Emily Torres


Emily Torres, who is a junior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of March 7.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her ability to be a trustworthy, reliable, good-humored student with dedication to having exemplary grades.

According to the committee, Torres is always willing to help her classmates with everything from solving a tough math problem to helping new Discovery students make their spartan helmets for their graduation parade.

“She has the combination of a positive attitude and the belief that she can always improve, which has led to a tremendous amount of growth during her time here,” members of the selection committee said.

Torres is an active member of both the National Honor Society and SkillsUSA. She has spent time representing Triumph well in both local and national competitions.

After school, Torres works with the GEMS program where she mentors younger students.

“Emily is a leader in our building, always modeling Discovery skills for other students,” Triumph Principal Troy Lake said. “She exemplifies what it means to be a great student, classmate and friend and we are so glad that she is here at Triumph.”

Feb. 28 - Ava Walsh


Carey Junior High eighth grader Ava Walsh has been named the Feb. 28 Student of the Week.

She was nominated by the selection committee for working extremely hard in all her classes, setting a great example for her peers and for being an exemplary student.

The committee noted that Walsh has a noteworthy character as she is always someone who goes out of her way to help other students and staff around the school.  They also said that she is a leader in both the halls and in extracurricular activities that she participates in.

Walsh is a member of National Junior Honor Society, and Carey’s basketball, track and volleyball teams. When not in school, she plays club volleyball and soccer.  

“Ava’s attitude is always positive,” Carey Principal Derek Nissen said. “She represents the best of Carey Junior High.” 

Feb. 21 - Nevaeh Kennedy


South High senior Nevaeh Kennedy has been named the Feb. 21 Student of the Week.

She was nominated by the selection committee for being hard working, overcoming many obstacles in her life and for being highly involved in school and the community.

“She embodies our HERD qualities,” Principal Kristen Siegel said. “She is honorable in her actions, enthusiastic about her school and extracurricular activities, responsible and determined to succeed in all she does.”  

According to the committee, Kennedy has taken several AP classes during her time at South High and has been involved in National Honor Society (NHS), Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and was instrumental in getting a female mascot named Tina the Bison to pair with the school’s male mascot, Tyson.

During her time at South High, Kennedy has been involved in Teen Leadership classes and has mentored elementary and junior high students.

“She is active in her community,” the committee said. “She is a youth leader at her church, volunteers with the education department at Life Choice Pregnancy and is an advocate for victims of assault.”

In her free time, Kennedy works with the Young Adult and Youth Advocates group, which represents, advocates and brings awareness to victims of sexual assault.

Following the work she did on her FCCLA project, which was recognized at the state and national level, winning her championship, Kennedy was asked to serve at the board for the Wyoming Sexual Violence Prevention Council.

After graduation, Kennedy plans to attend Southwestern Assemblies of God (SAGU) in Waxahachie, Texas, to study nursing with a focus on becoming a mid-wife. While attending SAGU she also plans on dual enrolling to work toward becoming a youth pastor.

Kennedy’s goal is to continue her work by advocating and bringing awareness to victims of sexual assault while in college and after.

Feb. 14 - Alanah Sparks


Alanah Sparks, who is a junior at Central High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 14.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her involvement in school and her commitment to academics.

“She is also a positive contributor to the Central High community,” Principal Fred George said.

Sparks holds a weighted GPA of 3.81 as she is enrolled in both Advanced Placement and advanced World Language classes.

She is the co-founder and an active member of Central High’s Young Black Scholars and a member of the indoor track team.

During her free time, Sparks likes to spend time with her family. As a military dependent, Sparks appreciates the support her family provides one another.

In the future, Sparks plans on attending college where she hopes to major in forensic science or criminal justice. Her future career goal is to serve as a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) profiler.

This summer Sparks will be traveling to Washington D.C. where she will intern with a professional forensic scientist. 

Feb. 7 - Camilla Vazquez


Camilla Vazquez, who is an eighth grader at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Feb. 7.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her phenomenal work ethic in all of her honors classes, her amazing grades, positivity, politeness, respect and enthusiasm.

“She is extremely polite and respectful to all adults and her peers. If I could clone her, I would. She is truly a positive young lady,” teacher Kaycee Bruns said.

Math teacher Lisa Harbeson states that Vazquez is a focused, respectful and kind young lady who always strives to do her best academically and personally.

History teacher Neil Hokanson said, “Camilla is a great student. She is always enthusiastic, friendly and always works to improve in her academics.”

Vazquez first came to Cheyenne from Chicago where she attended a bilingual school. She took English as a Second Language courses and graduated within two years.

She enjoys playing basketball and has played since sixth grade. Recently, Vazquez completed her confirmation at St. Joseph’s church.

In the future, Vazquez is interested in studying Law at the University of Chicago. She would like to thank her mother, father and younger brother for always being supportive of her and her goals. 

Jan. 31 - Connor Parks


East High senior Connor Parks has been named the Jan. 31 Student of the Week.

He was nominated by the selection committee for being a powerful self-advocate, an extremely kind young man and for his positivity.  

According to the committee, Parks is an excellent student and takes courses that will support him in his future goals.

Parks is an active member of the East High community and participates in cross country and indoor track.  

“Connor always has a smile on his face and a friendly greeting,” selection committee members said. “He is a shining example of kindness in the East High culture.”

Parks plans to attend Laramie County Community College after graduation as he hopes to major in exercise science to become a personal trainer.

“Connor is a dedicated and trustworthy student,” East High teacher Mrs. Dundon said. “He is a team player and is always ready to uplift those around him. Connor rocks!”

Jan. 24 - Sierra Hussey


Sierra Hussey, who is an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 24.

“Sierra is a hard worker, kind, respectful towards adults and peers and is always there to help when needed,” selection committee members said. “She always tries her best.”

Along with enjoying the outdoors, Hussey enjoys hanging out with her siblings, playing video games, drawing, listening to music and working on homework. Her favorite subject is math.

Additionally, Hussey would like to earn a college degree and is currently leaning towards teaching kindergarten.

“Sierra is the most delightful, hardworking, kindhearted student in our community,” selection committee members said. “She is positive, helpful and an all-around great individual.”

Jan. 17 - Johnny Cornwall


Johnny Cornwall, who is a senior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 17.

At Triumph, emphasis is placed on the six P’s: Prompt, Prepared, Polite, Positive Mental Attitude, Participate, and Produce.

“Johnny excels at each of these character traits,” members of the selection committee said. “He always shows dignity and respect to others, whether it is peers, teachers, or custodial staff.”

According to the committee, Cornwall is prompt and prepared for his classes, even while taking a college English course at Laramie County Community College in addition to his high school schedule.

“He is getting concurrent enrollment credit for multiple classes in high school,” committee members said. “He is displaying participation and production to the highest level.”

Along with being a bright student, Cornwall is quick to learn and always asks insightful questions.

“Johnny has one of the kindest, politest personalities that I interact with daily,” Triumph Principal Troy Lake said. “He works hard and puts in extra time and effort when presented with a challenge.”

Jan. 10 - Cayden Haynes


Caden Haynes, who is a seventh grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 10.

“Caden is a straight A student who is polite and extremely respectful to everyone,” members of the selection committee said. “He lives what it means to be kind to others and helps them to succeed.”

He volunteers to help his teachers by sweeping or doing extra clean-up in the classrooms. Haynes plays football, wrestles and is a member of WYCO Baseball Academy.

“Caden chooses to sit with the PALS students as he helps them and makes special effort to include them in all conversations,” committee members said. “He has a heart of gold.” 

Jan. 3 - Sean Emery


South High senior Sean Emery has been named the Jan. 3 Student of the Week.

He was nominated by the selection committee for excelling academically, maintaining a weighted 4.0 GPA and taking multiple honor’s and Advanced Placement courses.

According to the committee, Emery is a quiet, hardworking student who is always willing to help his fellow classmates, teachers and parents. He uses his 3-D printing skills to help teachers with projects for their classrooms.

“He is an excellent math student,” the committee said. “He works hard to understand the materials and has grown during his time at South into a role model for his peers.”

Emery enjoys robotics, math and science. He is a member of SkillsUSA, Robotics Club and the AVID program at South High. As a member of SkillsUSA he has lettered in robotics.

“Sean has competed in robotics every year and continues to prove to be a leader,” said South High engineering and drafting teacher Christopher Lindt. “Last year, he was a state champion in First Tech Robotics Club. He is always trying something new with his 3-D printer at home. I can honestly say that anything Sean is going to do, he is going to give 110%.”

Dec. 13 - Lydia Looby


Lydia Looby, who is a senior at Central High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 13.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her involvement in school and her commitment to academics.

Looby holds a weighted GPA of a 3.95 as she is enrolled in both Advanced Placement and dual enrollment classes at Central High.

She is an active member of Central High’s National Honors Society, yearbook staff and volleyball team. Aside from her amazing academic career, Looby works approximately 20 hours a week in retail sales.

“She is extremely optimistic,” Principal Fred George said. “She is also a positive contributor to the Central High community as she is a natural leader.”

During her free time, Looby likes to spend time snowboarding and playing cards or board games with her family.

 Looby plans to attend the University of Wyoming to study engineering. She then wants to attend medical school in hopes of practicing medicine. 

Dec. 6 - Layla Munoz


Layla Munoz, who is a seventh grader at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Dec. 6.

She was nominated by the selection committee for being extremely charismatic, driven, having a wonderful work ethic, positive attitude, and for working well with all her classmates.

“What I appreciate about her the most is that she is self-motivated, and it rubs off on other students during collaborative work,” teacher Karen Perez said. “She does the big things right, but it is her willingness to do the small things every day that make her a standout student. I cannot say enough nice things about this kiddo. She is truly awesome.”

P.E. teacher Roger Zwonitzer states that Munoz is polite, pleasant, listens and follows instructions well. And Spanish teacher Bobbi Jenkins said, “She is a hard-working student who is always staying busy during Advisory. She participates in all lessons we have and is a great leader for the class.”

In addition to her outstanding academics, Munoz has played soccer since she was 6 years old. She also likes to play basketball and likes spending quality time with her family. She enjoys her classes and her teachers.

In the future, Munoz plans to attend Laramie County Community College and the University of Wyoming as she is interested in the medical field and hopes to become either a nurse or an anesthesiologist. She wants to stay close to home because of her close connection with her family and her community. 

Nov. 29 - Dylan Watson


Dylan Watson, who is a seventh grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 29.

“Dylan is focused and polite and is always prepared for class,” selection committee members said. “He works well with everyone. Dylan has great grades and excellent attendance.”

Along with talking to friends, Watson enjoys playing baseball and plans to play on the school’s basketball team. His favorite subject is geography.

“Additionally, he’s a great student in class and is kind to everyone,” Assistant Principal Charla McClinton said.

Watson is working to finish the quarter with all A’s and wants to sign up for honors classes. His aspirations include playing major league baseball or a career in the NBA.

According to Watson’s teachers and peers, “He is a great example for others. In general, he just rocks!”

Nov. 22 - Hailey Simons


East High senior Hailey Simons has been named the Nov. 22 Student of the Week.

She was nominated by the selection committee for excelling academically, maintaining a 3.83 GPA and scoring a 32 on the ACT with a perfect score of 36 on the reading sub-test.

According to the committee, Simons takes AP courses and especially enjoys her English, German, and art classes, citing Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Prevedel as two of her favorite teachers. Her favorite thing about East is the positive school community.

Simons is a member of the East High Book Club as reading is her favorite pastime. She is also a G-Team mentor who helps facilitate freshman orientation and serves as East High ambassador.

Her attendance at the High School Summer Institute through the University of Wyoming has sparked her interest as she plans to return to UW after graduation to pursue a degree in anthropology and archeology.

She is excited for the “more personalized learning” that happens in college, and for the opportunity of having more class options to choose from.

“Hailey is humble and kind; she is helpful to others and makes East a better place by being here,” the selection committee stated. “She contributes to the East High learning community not only through her intellect, but also her outstanding character. Because she is quiet, she flies under the radar, and we wanted to recognize her because she is such an outstanding student.”

Nov. 15 - Sumer Kinney-Mojanovsky


Summer Kinney-Mojanovski, who is a junior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Nov. 15.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her ability to be an independent self-starter and for working diligently to earn credit, balance work and academics.

According to the committee, she is passionate about social justice and improving her learning environment as well as being an advocate for her fellow students.

“She speaks truth to power without losing her empathy and politeness,” members of the selection committee said.

Furthermore, her efforts to earn college credit before graduation are already paying dividends. Kinney-Mojanovski has concrete post-secondary plans that are sure to impress all.

“She demonstrates the best of the Spartan Strong spirit,” Triumph Principal Troy Lake said. “Few students demonstrate resilience with grace so well. This is why Triumph is so proud to name her as our Student of the Week.”

Nov. 8 - Mary Wallace


Carey Junior High eight grader Mary Wallace has been named the Nov. 8 Student of the Week.

She was nominated by the selection committee for her dedication to learning, and for putting her full effort into the work she does for all four of her honors’ core classes.

The committee noted that Wallace goes above and beyond the success criteria for every assignment and is a true believer in higher education as she seeks out opportunities for growth.

In addition, Wallace also serves as a leader for the Carey school community. She advocates for peers and herself by asking questions that help foster inquiry in the classroom. She also assists other students when they need help.

When not in school, she takes private piano and harp lessons. She has dedicated her last seven years to playing the piano and two years to playing the harp. Wallace is also in the process of writing a novel as she wants to practice her skills as a writer. In the future, she hopes to be a published author.

“She lives each day to its fullest with integrity and positivity as a student, classmate, friend, daughter and person,” Carey Principal Derek Nissen said. “She is a blessing to Carey and truly deserves to be recognized at the district level as the LCSD1 Student of the Week.”

Nov. 1 - Dexter Steinhausen


South High senior Dexter Steinhausen has been named the Nov. 1 Student of the Week.

The selection committee nominated Steinhausen because of his many classroom, community and club achievements. He is very active in swimming, participating in both school and club teams, as well as serving as an instructor with the Capital City Athletics Swim Club in Cheyenne.

Steinhausen is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, is a National Honor’s Society nominee for the current inductee class and is part of South High’s Advancement Via Individual Determination program.

His hobbies outside of school include bowling, football, basketball and volleyball.

“Dexter is a leader in the school that exemplifies our HERD values daily,” South Associate Principal Louis Sisemore said. “He has helped our custodial staff after football games clean up trash around our stadium and our school without prompting.”

Oct. 25 - Andie Prince


Central High School junior Andie Prince has been named the Oct. 25 Student of the Week.

She was nominated by the selection committee because of her infectious personality and work ethic. The committee noted her time spent as a student assistant in the Central High administration office made her an obvious choice for this accolade.

In addition, Prince excels in the classroom and on the women’s swim team. She is enrolled in an advanced placement (AP) Spanish 5 course, she is a member of the school's Spanish club, and she maintains a 3.7 GPA.

When not in school, she is employed at Capitol Cinema. She is also a member of the Greater Wyoming Council of the Boy Scouts of America and is currently working toward an Eagle Scout rank. Prince holds a leadership position in her church’s youth group, and she is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Recently, Prince attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp. She intends on serving as a youth counselor at the next RYLA.

After she graduates from high school, Prince plans to attend the University of Wyoming where she hopes to swim collegiately, and to pursue a medical degree, eventually becoming a psychiatrist.

Oct. 18 - Alaysha Walker


Alaysha Walker, who is an eighth grade student at Johnson Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 18.

According to members of the selection committee, Walker is a kind and considerate student. She is a hard worker and always completes her work to the best of her ability. She is always willing to help teachers and her classmates.

Walker is a straight A student and is a student announcer at sporting events.

“Alaysha Walker is a dedicated student who is always willing to help others and continuously strives for excellence,” committee members said. “She is a great example of our Firebird pledge and is always looking for ways that she can improve herself and her learning.”

Walker is a singer, and she takes lessons at Act Two studios. Outside of school, she babysits and enjoys spending time with her family. After graduation, she wants to attend The Julliard School.

“Alaysha is not only a smart student, but she also embodies what it means to be a Firebird,” committee members said. “She is a joy to have in class and an exceptional ambassador of Johnson.”

Oct. 11 - Zoey Brown


Zoey Brown, who is a junior at East High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 11.

 “Zoey is a very humble, funny, kind student who is always encouraging to those around her,” members of the selection committee said. “She is extremely positive which is very admirable during challenging times.”

Committee members said Brown is a very good student, and she is taking honors trigonometry, differential calculus and AP statistics simultaneously.

Outside of school, Brown plays for the Colorado Fourteeners hockey team. She practices four times a week in Littleton, Colorado, and spends her weekends dedicated to clinics or competitions. Brown’s team qualified for nationals in 2020, but due to COVID-19, it was canceled.

According to the selection committee, “Zoey enjoys taking on leadership roles and was team captain for three consecutive years.”

Brown also helps with the local Zonta club, participates in the Silent Witness Walk and helps spread awareness about domestic violence and human trafficking. At school, Brown started the Z club to encourage young women to get involved in their community.

In her free time, she also works at McDonalds.

“She’s working hard to make a difference in her community,” committee members said. “Zoey is one of those kids that excels and simply always does what’s expected; she’s not afraid to go above and beyond and is a bright light in the halls of East High.”

Oct. 4 - Taegan Becker


Taegen Becker, who is an eighth grade student at McCormick Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Oct. 4.

“Taegen is a leader at McCormick,” members of the selection committee said. “She is always prepared for class, works well with others and always has a smile on her face.”

According to the committee, Becker is a model student who focuses on getting good grades. She enjoys baking and ice skating in her free time.

“Taegen is kind and respectful to her peers and the staff members at McCormick,” the selection committee said.

After graduation, Becker wants to become a realtor.

Sept. 27 - Matthew Andera


Matthew Andera, who is a senior at Triumph High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 27.

Since 2018, when Andera enrolled at Triumph High, he has been a great student who listens well in class.

“He has phenomenal memory and is very rarely in need of review,” members of the selection committee said. “If we learned something in class, even if it has been a year or more, it is likely that he still remembers it.”

According to the committee, he is a very bright student who often draws connections between concepts and classes that other students don’t recognize.

“Matthew Andera is a one-of-a-kind student,” committee members said. “He is always up for whatever is happening in class, gives it his best and without fail—excels at it.”

Along with being a bright student, Andera is also courageous and not afraid to speak up when someone has acted or spoken impolitely.

“Matthew has a great sense of humor, gets along well with others and is a true asset to our school,” committee members said. “In short—he’s the best!”

Sept. 20 - Joseph Lucero


Joseph Lucero, who is an eighth grade student at Carey Junior High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 20.

“Joseph Lucero is an exemplary student who always sets a great example for his peers,” members of the selection committee said. “Joseph works extremely hard in his classes and his grades are an example of this.”

Along with being a straight A student, Lucero is a member of the Carey basketball team. Outside of school, he participates in Boy Scouts. He enjoys hunting, fishing and camping.

“Joseph is a leader in both the halls and in the extracurricular activities that he participates in,” the selection committee said.

During his free time, Lucero volunteers at his church, with the Needs Inc. food drive and the Cheyenne Greek Festival.

“Joseph's character is worth noting as he is always a student who goes out of his way to help the other students around the school,” committee members said. “Joseph's attitude is always positive, and he represents the best of Carey Junior High.”

Sept. 13 - Rayelle "Ellie" Brewer


Rayelle Brewer, who is a senior at South High, was selected as Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Sept. 13.

“Ellie is an active member of the South High community and her local community,” members of the selection committee said.

Brewer participates in the Robotics Club. She recently received an award for first Dean’s list for the State of Wyoming at the state robotics competition.

She is a member of the South High swim team. In her off season, she competes in club swimming and manages the boys’ swim team.

Along with the school’s orchestra, Brewer is involved with her church’s youth orchestra. She is a member of FBLA and performs numerous hours of community service.

“Ellie manages to maintain a weighted GPA of a 4.1, while balancing all of her extracurricular activities,” Assistant Principal Kristen Siegel said.

After high school, Brewer would like to study marine biology in college and continue swimming. She hopes to work in marine rescue and rehabilitation in the future.
